Curt's Ride to Cure Cancer

Curt's Team

Each team member will be bicycling part or all of the 620 miles from Jacksonville to Key West, or are part of our support team for the riders.

Dave Lavery

Team Captain and the founder of "Curt's Ride to Cure Cancer"

Dave's ride this year is being dedicated to two special people. Dave's dad, John Lavery, lost to prostate cancer, but not before he gave Dave the most powerful lessons of his life on commitment and the importance of keeping your word. Adele Smith, a current Herndon High School student who has embarked on her own confrontation with cancer. Adele is a promise for the future, one free from this disease, and a spirit that inspires Dave. "For them and all the others we know affected by cancer, the Curt's Ride to Cure Cancer project has been established as part of the 'Team ACS' program."

Dave Lavery

"Curt's Ride" Team 2011

Dave Lavery Mary Clemens, bicycling for part of Day #1.
Mary will join Curt's Team in honor of a dear friend, Pat Gammel, lost to cancer before they could enjoy retirement together. And also in honor of a friend's daughter, Karen Krigsman who has fought and won the battle in her young life. "Deb and I have driven the first day of the ride, arrived home tired (from driving), hungry (from driving) and came to the reluctantly mature decision that we may just ride the last 50 meters of Amelia Island with the team and wave the rest off on the adventure, free of the bone creaking, barely speaking, sweat wreaking senior adventurers."
Lisa May Lisa May, bicycling 620 miles from Jacksonville to Key West.
Lisa May is a native Floridian, who is eager to conquer her home state on two wheels. In addition to cycling, Lisa enjoys soccer, both playing and watching. Her day job is at NASA HQ in the Mars Exploration Program, and she is the mother of two young men (and assorted pets). In 2010, Lisa lost her beloved mother-in-law, Bobbi Jackson, to colon cancer and is riding in her memory. She is also riding in honor of Susan Niebur, a friend and colleague, who is waging a spirited, inspiring, and difficult battle with cancer. Lisa will celebrate her 50th birthday on Curt's Ride and hopes her efforts to raise funds for ACS will help others celebrate more birthdays, too.
Susan Milich Susan Milich, bicycling 620 miles from Jacksonville to Key West.
Susan's friend and neighbor of 26 years, William T. "Billy" Druhan, lost his brief battle with pancreatic cancer on June 24th, 2011 – just as the Curt's Ride 2011 Team was coming together. Billy's strength, courage, and integrity motivate Susan to seek new challenges and to help fight the disease that has taken him from us. Susan's ride honors his wonderful family, especially Tammy, Joey, and Maggie, who are active participants in the annual ACS "Relay for Life". "Ride ON!"
Sharon Georgallis Moffit Sharon Georgallis Moffett, Social Director for Curt's Ride to Cure Cancer.
Sharon is the most important person on the team as she is the one who will be waiting at the Southernmost Point marker in Key West for Curt's Team to complete their 620 mile treck. Sharon will bestow a celebratory Margarita to each rider who finishes. Now THAT is motivation!
Stacey O'Brien Stacey O'Brien, bicycling 620 miles from Jacksonville to Key West.
This is Stacey's second year riding with Curt's Team, having participated in the Miami to Key West segment of the 2010 innaugural ride. Stacey rides in memory of loved ones that she has sadly lost to cancer: mom, DJ Harms (1989, to brain tumor); sister, Stephanie Dooley (1996, to synovial sarcoma); dad, Chuck McClain (2001, to lung cancer). Stacey is dedicating this years ride to her high school classmate and friend, Jaime Ryan Kernus, who continues to fight the battle with stage 4 non hodgkins lymphoma. "Jaime's courage and strength are my inspiration. Live, Love, Laugh with Jaime, and keep on pedaling towards that Margarita!"
Joe Parish Joe Parrish, bicycling from Miami to Key West.
Joe Parrish is an avid cyclist, pilot and technologist who hails from the Sunshine State. His bicycle has more computational power than the Apollo spacecraft. Joe is riding in memory of his mother, Agi Parrish, and for all of those who are fighting to eradicate cancer.
Deborah Lavery Powers Deborah Lavery Powers, bicycling for part of Day #1.
Deb will be pedaling with Curt's Team on her new bike (an 80th birthday present) in memory of so many, starting - most importantly - with Dave's dad, John Lavery, lost to cancer when only 48, and Len Shephard, neighbor and dear friend. She honors the scores of friends who still live, and laugh - as survivors - while enjoying a glass of vino. Or, better yet, a Margarita!
Jim Powers Jim Powers, hosting Curt's Team.
Jim joins Deb in hosting Curt's Team at their home on Amelia Island the night before the ride begins. Jim honors the memory of his mother-in-law, Anne Bender, and, as always, the memory of his mother, Katherine McCamy Powers. Cancer took them both. He also toasts (with a bit of the Powers Irish) Judy, Karen, Marge, and Barbara, long time friends who are also champion survivors.
Steve Ray Steve Ray, driving the support/chase van on Curt's Ride 2011.
Steve is a 12 year lung cancer survivor who is participating, not only because of his high school friend, Curt, but also because so many in his broadcast industry continue to be affected by the disease. Two co-workers in particular; one of whom is whipping thyroid cancer, and for his friend & co-worker from WMAL, Jerry Klein, who will undergo a complete esophageal resection on October 13th to stave off the spread of his cancer.
Angie Smith Angie Smith, bicycling from Miami to Key West.
Angie is riding because of Dave's drive and commitment to ensure that Curt's battle with cancer was the platform for an event that brings awareness and support to the effort of wiping out this devastating disease which has affected so many lives including her mother (breast cancer), grandmother (colon cancer), sister-in-law, Denise (breast cancer), and 17 year old daughter, Adele, who battled thyroid cancer last spring.
